In UK businesses, small and large, there are definite signs of greater economic activity. The not-so-good news is that we still have it all to do. But we're held back by a European club which will undo our progress.

Globalisation doesn't take prisoners". "This is Asia's Century". "Export or die". Through inactivity, vacillation, timorous party political back-sliding, those we elect to govern us are in the process of destroying one of the few globally competitive positions we hold.... Marvellous! From next month, 400,000 small businesses will be excluded from paying the pernicious jobs tax; Employers' National Insurance Contributions. The only impost in the Country that taxes job creation not dosh will no longer apply to those employers paying £2,000 pa or less.

The chances of George Osborne delivering an interesting, inspiring Budget full of BHAG's on Wednesday are about the same as BBC's Rugby Commentator, Eddie Butler, ever delivering an unbiased commentary when England or Wales are playing. That's about the same chance as last Saturday's referee in Cardiff, Steve Walsh, not dishing the English pack in the scrum; ie zilch, nil, nowt!

It is becoming tedious to hear (as we did again last week) Labour politicians declaring "of course there must be cuts, but not this one". Even they, amongst the hypocrisy and deceit of party politics, recognise that, to within a margin that is irrelevant when viewing the scale of the deficit, realise there is no alternative to Plan A;

As I neared the end of my time at the CBI some six years ago now, I remarked privately to politicians of all parties and to various CBI members that I was finding it increasingly and frustratingly difficult to see where the added value was in the UK's continuing membership of the European Union as presently constituted.
